Remains of Taipei Prison Wall

At that time anti-Japanese uprisings kept breaking out across Taiwan, and the Japanese authorities built large prisons, first in Taipei and Tainan. Taipei Prison is a tangible record of the history of Taiwan's modern prison system. Only a few high walls on the north and south sides remain. The prison had a radial plan, the fashion for prisons in many countries in the 19th century, and was surrounded by high walls. Most of their stone came from the Taipei city walls demolished in the 1910s, mainly andesite and Qilian stone. This stone had been brought during the Guangxu reign of the late Qing dynasty from quarries near Dazhi and Neihu to build the walls of Taipei Prefecture. It was first carried down from the hills to the Keelung River, then shipped by boat along the Tamsui River to the Hegoutou wharf.
