On Yangmingshan, Taipei Aowanda lets maple lovers see red maples without travelling to Canada or Japan, and without waiting for autumn and winter: in spring, from March to April, the garden is full of red maples. Its pines, cherry trees, cypresses, maples and camellias were all grown from saplings, so each has a distinctive shape.

Black pines and maples are the most numerous and are the garden's signature plants. What visitors remember most is the red maples each year. Maple viewing usually takes place in autumn and winter, and the leaves only turn red after a cold front has passed. Here the maples turn red in autumn and winter too, but the peak season is March to April, mainly because all the maples are grafted Japanese varieties. Because of the variety, the new buds stay red for more than a month; then, as temperatures rise and rain falls, the chlorophyll changes and the leaves turn from red to green. There are also several varieties in different colours.
