228 Peace Memorial Park

The park fills the block bounded by Gongyuan Road, Xiangyang Road, Huaining Street and Ketagalan Boulevard. It is a classical-style city park with a Japanese-style landscaped pond, arched bridges, lawns and paths, and an open-air music stage, and the Taipei 228 Memorial Museum and the 228 monument are also here. In the park are century-old trees, pigeons and squirrels, and many local residents playing chess and practising tai chi in the pavilions. The park keeps much of the classical landscaping of the Japanese-era Taipei New Park, including a Japanese arched bridge, Chinese-style pavilions beside the lotus pond and a retired old locomotive. The park's name commemorates the 228 Incident in Taiwan's modern history. At its centre stands the tall, distinctive 228 Peace Memorial Monument, whose simple, strong design expresses the hope for peace and reconciliation. Beside it, the 228 Memorial Museum, converted from a former radio station, is where visitors can learn about this history.
