Orange-yellow daylily flowers can be seen without travelling to Hualien: a field of golden daylilies blooms in the Muzha hills of Taipei. The daylily is known as the "one-day beauty", and another of its names is wangyoucao, "the plant that makes you forget sorrow" (忘憂草). The daylily's old name is xuancao (萱草). It belongs to the lily family and has trumpet-shaped flowers that open in the morning and wither by evening, hence the names "one-day lily" and "one-day beauty". The native species come in orange and yellow, and improved varieties come in many colours. Since ancient times the daylily has been regarded as the flower of mothers, standing for grace, intelligence and endurance. Daylily buds are classed as a cooling food: eaten in moderation they are said to cool people with a hot constitution, while people with a cold constitution should eat only a little or cook them with ginger and sesame oil.
