Forty-four South Village

The site keeps a bunker from that time, deliberately preserved by the designers. It no longer serves its original purpose but remains a trace of the village's history. There are several exhibition halls, and many houses keep their original appearance, with added cultural and creative elements and goods for sale. Building A, the family hall, is a play space for parents and children in the retro village setting, with themed educational toys handmade from natural materials. Building B, the village artefacts hall, holds static displays on the village's culture, with themes including its history, arts, village mothers, food, daily life, games and handicrafts, and a multimedia screening room. Building C is a cultural and creative dining space. Building D is for arts, books and theatre, combining theatre, reading, design and food. By day it is a bookshop with themed books and design products, and by night it becomes a theatre for new Taiwanese companies, scripts and productions. The Xinyi Civic Hall occupies four symmetrical buildings of the village, which keep the distinctive exterior of village architecture. Around them are the Military Dependants' Village Culture Park, Jingxin Park, a wide pedestrian plaza and Xinyi Elementary School. The village has become a gathering place for the culture of ordinary military families. Its low, old buildings stand in sharp contrast to the office towers of Taipei's financial centre around it, showing Xinyi's past and present side by side.
