Hu Shih Memorial Hall

All his life he advocated a scholarly method of "bold hypotheses, careful verification" and "every statement must have evidence". He served as ambassador to the United States, president of the university 北京大學 and president of the national research academy 中央研究院. The memorial hall was originally his home in Nangang (1958-1962), when he returned to Taiwan late in life to head the academy. After Hu Shih died on 24 February 1962, the academy's council resolved that his former residence be used entirely as the Hu Shih Memorial Hall. A management committee for the hall was set up at once, and the memorial hall was formally established on 10 December the same year. In January 1998 it was placed under the academy's institute of modern history (近代史研究所). The memorial hall has three parts. The first is the Nangang house where he lived (1958-1962) after returning to Taiwan to head the academy, the Taipei former residence of Hu Shih. Its building, corridors and furnishings are largely as they were in his lifetime. The second is the exhibition room, built in 1964 with a donation from C. V. Starr of the American insurance company 美國亞保險公司. It displays Hu Shih's writings, manuscripts, photographs, personal effects and memorabilia, and a documentary on Hu Shih in Taiwan. The third is Hu Shih's tomb. In 1974 the tomb area was extended as Hu Shih Park. The park climbs the hillside in steps, with winding, shady paths and quiet woodland.
