Jingmei Jiying Temple

On Jingmei Old Street, the temple was originally built inside the bamboo-fenced settlement at Jingwei. It is dedicated to the protector gods of people from Anxi County, Quanzhou Prefecture, Fujian: Baoyi Zunwang (Zhang Xun) and Baoyi Dafu (Xu Yuan). Because of poor feng shui, it was moved in 1867 (the sixth year of the Tongzhi reign) to the lower end of Jingwei Street, its present site. Migrants from Anxi came to Taipei; most were tea farmers, so they chose the damp hills of Wenshan to grow tea, and they brought their local protector gods, including Baoyi Zunwang, Baoyi Dafu and Qingshui Zushi. The Anxi settlers then were mainly of three clans, Gao, Zhang and Lin. Over time their numbers grew and they cleared land from Jingmei to Muzha, Shenkeng and Shiding. As more people worshipped the Anxi gods, the Jiying Temple expanded into three temples; the Gao clan's Jiying Temple inside Jingmei Market is one of them. The temple carries the history of Jingmei Old Street and is a Grade 3 historic monument. It has many wall decorations and fine stone carvings, as well as wooden corridors, windows and structures that blend with the old street.
