Yanping Riverside Park

From Zhongxiao Bridge to the end of Minsheng West Road there is a large open area. Entering from the end of Nanjing West Road (Gate No. 4), you see dense woods, lawns and shady trees. This has long been the back garden of Datong District residents: early in the morning older women do folk dancing in the square, and older men walk and practise tai chi. Inside the Nanjing West Road water gate (No. 4) is Yanping Temple, still a meeting place for local elders. It is estimated to have been built around 1905. Under the large offering table in the temple courtyard, the figure of the Tiger Lord (虎爺) is simple and lively in form. Outside the water gate at the end of Minsheng West Road (No. 5) is Dadaocheng Wharf. Inside the gate you see a brightly coloured Tangshan junk, an elegant arched bridge and a Blue Highway boat pier. Dadaocheng Wharf (Water Gate No. 5) has the Blue Highway pier, a café plaza and the Tangshan junk. Cycling north along the river you see Yangmingshan and the sunset over the Tamsui River, a contrast with the traffic on the bridges over the river. Cyclists can also visit nearby historic sites, including Dadaocheng, Dihua Street, Xiahai City God Temple, Taipei Confucius Temple, Dalongdong Baoan Temple and Yongle Market, for a glimpse of Dadaocheng's past prosperity.
