This was originally the office of the newspaper 台灣日日新報, formed by the merger of two Japanese newspapers, 台灣新報 and 台灣日報; it was the largest newspaper of its time and the longest published. On 26 October 1945, Li Wanju, on behalf of the Office of the Chief Executive, took over 台灣新報 and renamed it 台灣新生報, at the time the only official newspaper.

During the 228 Incident in 1947, the paper's general manager Ruan Chaori and the editor-in-chief of its Japanese edition, Wu Jinlian, were forcibly taken away by people sent by the Taiwan Provincial Office of the Chief Executive, and what became of them remains unknown.
