Completed in 1919 as the Japanese-era Office of the Governor-General, where 13 Governors-General worked from the seventh on. After 1945 several government offices shared it, and every president since has used it as the Presidential Office.

Japan's rule of Taiwan was not simply territorial expansion but the first step in its colonial plans for East Asia, so everything had to be a model that could later be shown to other colonies that 'submitted'. With this aim, the Japanese learned from the West and built many European Baroque-style buildings in Taiwan. The Presidential Office Building was the Office of the Governor-General in the Japanese era and was completed in 1919. The Governor-General's office faced east, looking over the whole of Taipei as far as Sishoushan (the Four Beasts Mountains). Thirteen governors-general worked here, starting with the seventh. After Taiwan's Retrocession, Chen Cheng's Southeast Military and Administrative Headquarters, the Executive Yuan and the Office of the President of the Republic of China shared the building, and every president since has used it as the Presidential Office.
