Hexing Coal Mine

Beside Taipei Cihui Temple, next to Jiupi Stream, lies a hidden, disused old coal mine. Mining in the early days left large heaps of coal waste, making the ground relatively fragile. The site was later stabilised and, together with the old mining area beside Jiupi Stream, landscaped as a whole, combining the local natural scenery with the character of the mine to create a new place for leisure. From the entrance, a brick-red path with mine-cart track motifs leads into a 'Time Tunnel', past a lifelike scene of mine carts leaving the pit and a fired ceramic mural, 'The Life of Coal', which shows coal from its formation to finished products. At the end is a 'Spiral Staircase', and with luck you may see bats hanging at rest at the old mine's waste outlet. Interpretive displays and features along the track-themed path explain coal mining.
