About

The park was formerly the Taipei Winery, founded by the Japanese in 1914. It first produced sake and later became the Taipei Winery; it is now a Taipei City monument.

In the Qing dynasty the area was known as Dazhuwei in Sanbanqiao Village. In 1922 the Government-General of Taiwan abolished Taipei's old street and village names and renamed it Kabayama-cho, after Kabayama Sukenori, the first Japanese Governor-General of Taiwan. Kabayama-cho then included government facilities such as the Taipei City Office (now the site of the Executive Yuan), the Kabayama freight station and the Taipei Winery, and was an area developed under Taipei's Japanese-era city plan. Under the Nationalist government the name was changed to Huashan, which is still in use. After 1999 the park became a venue for art exhibitions, music performances and other cultural activities for the arts community, non-profit groups and individuals. The park also has restaurants, shops and galleries, old buildings have been renovated and installation art set up, and behind the park is a large lawn for picnics and play.
