National 228 Memorial Museum

It was designed under Ide Kaoru, head of the building section of the Governor-General's Office, so its style is close to that of the Public Hall: an eclectic early modern style, faced with brown tiles, with geometric washed-stone decoration on the parapet. After the war, in 1945, it briefly served as the meeting place of the Provincial Consultative Council. From 1959 it was leased by the United States Information Service in Taiwan, and after Taiwan and the United States broke off diplomatic relations in 1979 it was renamed the American Cultural Center, remaining in use until 2001. Five years of restoration work followed. It was officially named the National 228 Memorial Museum on 28 February 2007, and the museum opened on 28 February 2011. The building was designated a Taipei municipal historic site in 1993. Among the city's modern historic buildings it stands for the style of the 1930s, and it carries the story of Taiwan's modern history. Inside are a permanent exhibition on the 228 Incident, special exhibition galleries, arts spaces and a multi-purpose performance hall. Besides exhibitions on history, the museum holds events on democracy and human rights to explain the 228 Incident and the course of modern democracy, and offers a way to learn about human rights.
