About
Completed in August 1889 by Liu Mingchuan, the first governor of Taiwan Province, the bridge linked Sanchongpu (now Sanchong District) with the Dadaocheng wharf in Taipei. In 1895 it was called Tamsui Bridge.

On 27 February 1947 the Tianma Tea House incident over contraband cigarettes took place, and the protest march the following day, 28 February, gathered and set out from what is now the Taipei Bridge approach.
