Xuexue Cultural and Creative Foundation

This was the background to its founding: in both life and work, people urgently needed a rich cultural sensibility, an experience of culture and beauty, and companies were beginning to learn how to use 'cultural capital' and find creative business opportunities in culture. The name comes from long-standing Eastern ethical thought, from the 'Xueji' (Record on Learning) chapter of the Book of Rites: 'Though there be fine food, if you do not eat it you do not know its taste; though there be the perfect way, if you do not learn it you do not know its goodness. So by learning you come to know your shortcomings, and by teaching you come to know your difficulties. Knowing your shortcomings, you can turn back and examine yourself; knowing your difficulties, you can strive to improve. Hence it is said that teaching and learning help each other. The Yueming says that teaching is half of learning. Is this not what it means?' Xuexue thus means that teaching others and learning each make up half of learning. Xuexue hopes that a student in one classroom may be a teacher in another, and a teacher in one classroom a student in another, so that teachers and students learn from each other, get to know one another and work together across industries as each other's clients. This meets the great demand, as Taiwan's industries and job market change, for businesses of every kind to add value across boundaries through the cultural and creative industries. Xuexue offers not only cultural and creative learning but also art and design exhibitions as a source of inspiration, to share the experiences and thinking of artists and designers. Brought together in its space, these experiences and ideas prompt imagination and reflection, and encourage people to learn from teachers in different fields and engage with art and design, finding creative inspiration through cross-disciplinary encounters.
