About
The tiaotong culture of Zhongshan North Road dates from the Japanese colonial period. The Japanese-style eateries and bars in its blocks are popular with Japanese residents and tourists, and an exotic atmosphere carried over from the colonial period gives a sense of close ties with Taiwan's history.

The tiaotong still have a strong Japanese flavour: there are izakaya and kaiseki restaurants, and many places serving Japanese home cooking such as nikujaga (meat and potato stew), oden, eel rice and yakiniku, with a taste of old Tokyo deep in the lanes. The mix of Taiwanese and Japanese food here also reflects Taiwan's food culture from past to present; Qitiaotong (Seventh Tiaotong), for example, is the birthplace of Taiwan's yakiniku culture.
