Chili Art Gallery

The gallery is in a quiet lane off Da'an Road in Taipei. Its spaces reflect a diverse contemporary art scene, and it has curated exhibitions ranging from ink painting and painting to sculpture. It plans exhibitions around themes for different forms and categories of art. Besides solo and group shows of well-known artists, it curates group shows of new ink painters in response to current trends in East Asian ink painting worldwide, aiming to reflect the cultural context of contemporary Taiwanese ink painting. These younger artists do not keep to traditional brushwork and composition, and bring a new view of ink painting. For example, in 2014 the gallery held 'Taiwanese Ink, Korean Ink: Two Faces of Contemporary Ink Painting' (台水韓墨：當代水墨的兩地面相) in Taipei, and in 2015 it helped the art museum of Seoul National University in Korea hold 'Macro and Micro: Phenomena of Korean and Taiwanese Ink Painting' (巨視與微視：韓國．台灣水墨畫的現象). In abstract art, in 2015 it organised 'Alternative Abstraction, Where Cold and Hot Meet: Abstract Art from Taiwan and Korea' (另類抽象，冷熱相交地帶～台灣與韓國的抽象藝術展), curated by 文貞姬, chief researcher of a Korean art research institute, bringing together leading contemporary ink and abstract artists from Taiwan and Korea. The exhibition set out to explore how contemporary ink and abstract art differ between the two countries, given their different national characters and creative drives, to deepen cultural and artistic exchange between artists and scholars of Taiwan and Korea, to connect galleries, artists and collectors, and to stimulate the art market and collecting. The gallery aims to develop in academic, contemporary and international directions.
