About
Dihua Street, in the Dadaocheng area, is a miniature of Taipei's traditional market culture and an important landmark in Taiwan's commercial history. It is known for the wholesale and retail of dried goods from north and south, Chinese medicinal herbs, fabrics and tea, and it keeps the busy, friendly feel of a traditional market.

The street's architecture is mainly Baroque in style, mostly built in the late Qing and Japanese colonial periods, and combines European ornamental design with local Taiwanese building materials, a blend of East and West. The red-brick buildings on both sides are covered with fine carving, arches and elaborate decoration. During the Lunar New Year period Dihua Street becomes the 'New Year Goods Street'. Shops set up stalls along the street selling festive necessities, including sweets and snacks, gifts and ingredients for New Year dishes. Red lanterns hang overhead, and the street fills with festive atmosphere, the calls of sellers and crowds of people, a Taiwanese New Year scene. At other times of year, too, creative shops and cafés are set among the traditional buildings and draw young people. The street offers old-style goods and food and is a place where old and new, Chinese and foreign cultures meet.
