About
The name Guandu comes from the Spanish 'Casidor'; because the Japanese dropped the 'S' when they pronounced it, it became today's 'Guandu'. In ancient times Guandu was a centre for producing and exporting sulphur.

In 1895 it was a military fortress with a gun battery, and it was also hit by a meteorite; suspected meteorite remains are kept at the Ziqiang branch of Guandu Elementary School. Guandu Waterfront Park is large, with footpaths and cycle paths. Guandu Wharf is one of the boarding points of the 'Blue Highway' boat service, with four routes to Dadaocheng Wharf in Taipei, Tamsui Old Street, the Bali Left Bank and Fisherman's Wharf. From the Guandu riverside cycle path you can ride north to Tamsui Fisherman's Wharf, or south along the Keelung River to Shezi Island. The park has rich intertidal life to observe and study, and it looks different in the afternoon, at dusk and at night, especially the banks of the Tamsui River, the sunset over Guanyinshan in Bali and the landscape lights on the wharf after dark.
