Shilin Night Market

The largest night market in Taipei, it is near Jiantan MRT Station and covers a wide area in two main parts: the streets around the old Yangming Theatre, including the area around Cixian Temple on Danan Road, and Shilin Market at No. 101 Jihe Road. Most people come for food and shopping, with all kinds of novel goods and food on offer. This night market culture is part of Taipei's nightlife. It is best known for its wide range of snacks, a gathering of Taiwanese food: extra-large golden fried chicken cutlets, such as the Haodada chicken cutlet, crisp outside and tender inside; grilled skewers; Shilin big sausages; Shanghai pan-fried buns that squirt soup; spring rolls packed with braised pork and egg crisps; 'big cake wrapped round small cake' (dabing bao xiaobing), sweet, savoury and chewy; hot medicinal pork rib soup as a tonic; and local specialities such as stir-fried squid, 'frog lays eggs' (qingwa xiadan), Three Brothers douhua, scallion pancakes and cold noodles.
