Taipei City Wall-East Gate

The old East Gate Street that led to it inside the walls is today's Ketagalan Boulevard. Standing in front of the Presidential Office, the gate lies on the route of many rallies and marches, which has put it on camera countless times, and it has become a hub of politics and traffic in the area. Of the five gates of old Taipei, the East Gate had the finest workmanship. Its plaque reads 'Jingfu Gate'. Its structure was similar to that of the North Gate: thick brick walls rose from a stone base right up to the eaves, like an impregnable square fortress. Inside the double brick walls was a timber structure. The roof was a simple hip-and-gable (xieshan) roof sloping on four sides, and green-glazed pierced decorative bricks under the eaves added elegance. Later, the gate too was rebuilt as a northern Chinese palace-style gate tower, but the stone base and the arched gateway are original. The passage is a semicircular arch of stone blocks, and its frame keeps its thunder-pattern decoration, which still gives it historical value.
