Wufenpu clothing shops

The name dates from the Qing dynasty. Wufenpu was part of the lands of Taiwan's indigenous Pingpu peoples; five families, the He, Zhou, Shen, Du and Li, later bought the land from the Pingpu, cleared it and named their village Wufenpu. The story of Wufenpu mirrors Taiwan's economic development, from poverty, through working day and night, to prosperity. People who came north from central and southern Taiwan to make a living settled in Wufenpu. They took offcuts and unsold fabric left over from export garments and stitched them into underwear, children's clothes and rough workwear for street stalls and shops, and gradually Wufenpu made its name. Several hundred clothing businesses are gathered here, with stock from all over Taiwan and imports from Hong Kong, Thailand, Korea and Singapore. The low prices bring small traders to buy wholesale and retail, and the wide choice of fashionable cuts also brings young shoppers who mix and match their own style. Bargaining with shopkeepers is common here.
