Dadaocheng Theatre

Dadaocheng was also a cradle of traditional opera, known as the 'opera den' (戲窟). The theatre's purpose is to perform, promote and preserve traditional opera. The 9F theatre stages traditional forms such as Taiwanese opera (gezaixi), Peking opera, nanguan, beiguan, Hakka opera and shuochang storytelling. The 8F performance hall hosts regular glove puppetry, nanguan and shuochang programmes, and the 1F plaza hosts an arts programme called 遊於戲. In spring and autumn the theatre runs arts courses in opera, tea art, fabric crafts and more, and it also holds talks and opera film screenings. The 8F corridor gallery has a permanent glove puppetry exhibition and occasional special exhibitions, and groups of ten or more can book a guided tour. Rehearsal rooms and a multi-purpose presentation room are available for hire by arts groups. It also runs opera performances in schools, a school arts education programme, and a youth Taiwanese opera troupe that trains and performs, to pass on traditional opera in a planned way and develop young talent.
