Zhangshan Temple

As prayers were answered, the number of followers grew, and they paid to build a temple, which took its present form after several rebuilds. The temple stands high up, and the wide square in front looks out over Taipei, with views across the Taipei Basin. Tea plantations cover the surrounding area. Three hiking trails radiate from the temple: the Feilongshan Trail (towards the National Chengchi University ring road), the section from the temple to Zhinan Elementary School, and the Jiuqian Temple Trail. All three start and end at the temple square. The Feilong (Flying Dragon) Trail has an unbroken line of rocks down its centre which from a distance looks like a dinosaur's spine, giving the trail its name. The trail to Zhinan Elementary School runs past Tieguanyin tea fields all the way. The Jiuqian Temple Trail is steeper; along the way, in front of Fude Temple, stands a century-old banyan with tangled roots covered in knobbly burls.
