Machangding Riverside Park

Cycling along the Xindian River, past lawns flanked by tall buildings on both banks and along the Machangding cycle path, you come to Machangding Riverside Park, on the Xindian River next to Youth Park. The park was originally military land. After negotiations, the Taipei City Government joined it with the nearby Huajiang Waterfowl Park and Zhongzheng Riverside Park, giving Wanhua District a large area for recreation. Early morning here is fresh and clear. The long steps along the riverbank make a place to sit and watch the sunrise, with wide views and reflections in the water. In good weather the sun rises slowly beside the 101 building in the distance, and sunlight breaking through the clouds turns the river gold. In the park stands an earth mound. The inscription in front of it reads: 'In the 1950s, during the martial law period, idealists who sought social justice and political reform were arrested and executed by firing squad near this Machangding mound. To remember the dead and commemorate these events, the Machangding execution ground mound has been preserved to mourn the countless souls who gave their lives in Taiwan, and for those who come after to pay their respects.'
